I watched the entire vice-presidential debate tonight. I don't like politics but I believe it's my civic duty to be informed so I'm trying to understand. What I don't really get is why the debate has to be so negative. Why can't they occasionally say to each other, "that's a good point"? Even if they were to do so I'd expect it would be an ulterior motive to further some agenda. Can anyone help me be less jaded?

I watched the entire vice-presidential debate tonight. I don't like politics but I believe it's my civic duty to be informed so I'm trying to understand. I agree that was a a particularly unpleasant debate. Lots of interrupting, testiness, and talking over each other. The reason politicians in general can't be more accomadating of other viewpoints is because the stakes are too high. Compromise only works when a win-win is possible. In real life there are issues that are only win-lose.
